Complete Guide for Navratri Road Trip from Mumbai to Gujarat

A Navratri road trip from Mumbai to Gujarat isn’t just about driving long distances. It is also about experiencing nine nights of music, colour, devotion and Garba.

As you head north from Mumbai, the atmosphere will shift gradually. Shop windows will feature kediyus and chaniya cholis. Streets will be decorated with lights. Neighbourhoods, clubs and large event venues will have Garba music playing.

The most direct festival route runs from Mumbai to Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad. You can attend Garba in more than one city without having to travel across the entire state of Gujarat.

Navratri is a busy time of year. Hotels will be booked early. Popular Garba passes will sell out. Traffic will build up around event grounds. A seemingly straightforward route on a map may turn into a taxing journey after multiple nights of dancing.

This guide will help you create a manageable and realistic itinerary.

Why visit Gujarat during Navratri?

Navratri is celebrated across India, but is especially associated with Gujarat.

Traditional Garba usually starts around a lamp or an image of the Goddess. Dancers then circle around this central point, often slowly at first and then picking up speed with the music. Dandiya Raas uses sticks which are decorated and often performed in groups or with partners.

According to Gujarat Tourism, Ahmedabad and Vadodara are amongst the most popular places to experience Navratri. They also recommend attending smaller neighbourhood or village Garba for a more traditional experience of the festival. Gujarat Tourism Navratri guide

A Navratri road trip to Gujarat can provide you with:

  • Large professional Garba events
  • Smaller community Garba events
  • Opportunities to shop for traditional attire and handicrafts
  • Gujarati food and Navratri snacks
  • Visits to important temples
  • Heritage sites for day trips
  • Festive city atmospheres

You do not need to be a skilled dancer. Many first time attendees will start by watching the outer circle and then following along with simple steps.

When is Navratri in 2026?

Sharad Navratri starts on Sunday, 11 October 2026. The nine main festival nights run until Monday, 19 October, followed by Dussehra or Vijayadashami.

Event calendars may show varying dates if they include a pre-Navratri event, or the opening ceremony or Dussehra. Always check the event date on the booking page for the specific event. 2026 Navratri calendar reference

Do not rely on an old festival article to obtain information about passes or event venues. For example, the main festival page for Gujarat Tourism still features some 2025 events at the time of writing. The cultural information provided is useful but should be confirmed separately for 2026 events.

When should you book?

Try to book your hotel, cab and Navratri Garba event as early as possible if you plan to travel over a weekend or during the final nights.

Book in this order:

  1. Choose your main event city.
  2. Book your passes for the date of your choice.
  3. Choose a hotel in that area of the city.
  4. Book intercity transport.
  5. Arrange local transport or parking.
  6. Purchase or rent traditional Navratri attire.

Popular events may offer separate player and viewer passes. A player pass allows you entry into the dance area. A viewer pass may also allow access to a viewing or seating area.

Read the pass description before making a purchase.

Best road route from Mumbai to Gujarat

The recommended route is:

Mumbai → Thane → Vasai → Palghar → Vapi → Valsad → Surat → Bharuch → Vadodara → Ahmedabad

Most of the route is on NH48. The Ahmedabad to Vadodara section can use the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway depending on your chosen route and current traffic conditions.

  • Where you start in Mumbai.
  • Traffic in Thane and Ghodbunder
  • Roadworks and detours
  • Rain and waterlogging
  • Queues at toll plazas
  • Traffic around event grounds during Navratri
  • Time spent eating and resting
  • Traffic entering Vadodara or Ahmedabad

Rain and waterlogging affected parts of Gujarat in the days leading up to the 2026 festival. Check the live weather forecast, police updates and navigation updates the day before your journey.

Best time to leave Mumbai

Leaving between 5:00 am and 6:00 am usually allows you to avoid the worst of the morning traffic in Mumbai.

Do not plan to drive directly into Ahmedabad and attend a large-scale Navratri Garba that evening unless you have sufficient rest time. Driving for ten hours and then attending several hours of dance events will be tiring.

A safer option would be:

  • To stop overnight in Surat or Vadodara; or
  • To reach Ahmedabad in the afternoon and then rest and attend Garba the following night.

Road-trip essentials

Before leaving check:

  • FASTag status and balance
  • Tyre pressure and spare tyres
  • Brakes, lights and wipers
  • Vehicle insurance and pollution certificate
  • Registration and driving licence
  • Phone charger and offline map
  • Drinking water and simple food
  • Weather and road conditions

Ahmedabad, Vadodara or Surat: which city should you choose?

Each city offers a different experience.

Vadodara

Serious Navratri Garba lovers

Strong community culture and large scale events

Ahmedabad

Gandhinagar

Families and quieter stays

Well-planned roads and access to Ahmedabad events

Crowds and longer detours

Choose Surat when time is limited

Surat is a great choice for a two or three day trip. It has many Navratri Garba events and is much closer to Mumbai than Ahmedabad.

It is also a good food destination. Try dishes such as locho, khaman, ghari and others. However, make sure the dish is suitable for your fasting before ordering.

Choose Vadodara for a Garba first trip

Vadodara is often referred to as one of the greatest places to experience Garba in Gujarat. Events can have thousands of dancers, live singers and very large dance circles.

The city also has many daytime experiences available such as Sayaji Garden, Lukshmi Vilas Palace and nearby Champaner-Pavagadh.

Current listings indicate that some events in 2026 will have separate player and viewer passes. Prices and availability vary greatly so consult the event’s official booking page for final details. Vadodara Navratri event listings

Choose Ahmedabad for the widest variety

Ahmedabad is a great choice for those looking for a city break.

You can enjoy:

  • Large ticketed Navratri Garba events
  • Traditional Sheri or neighbourhood Garba
  • Heritage sites in old Ahmedabad
  • Sabarmati Ashram
  • Adalaj Stepwell
  • Gujarati thali
  • Shopping for traditional Navratri attire and handicrafts

Because events are spread throughout the city, choose your hotel after you have selected your event.

Recommended five-day Navratri itinerary

This itinerary allows for a mixture of Garba events and sightseeing while also providing time to rest.

Day 1: Mumbai to Surat

Leave early from Mumbai and follow NH48 towards Vapi, Valsad and Surat.

Make sure you take at least one good rest stop. If it is raining heavily, increase your buffer time and avoid driving through moving or deep water.

Once in Surat:

  • Check in and rest
  • Eat an early dinner
  • Attend a Navratri Garba event if you still feel fresh
  • Return to hotel at a planned time

Do not stay out too late if you plan to travel in the morning on the following day.

Day 2: Surat to Vadodara

The Surat to Vadodara journey appears short but traffic in Bharuch and entry into the cities can slow you down.

Arrive in Vadodara by afternoon and then take time to rest before heading to a Navratri Garba event.

If your pass has a reporting time, arrive early. Large events can have long queues for security and parking.

Only carry what is necessary:

  • Phone
  • Digital or printed ticket
  • Photo ID (government issued) if required
  • A small amount of cash
  • Hotel information
  • Contact details

Day 3: Vadodara and a second Navratri Garba night

Keep the morning slow. It can become difficult to enjoy Navratri Garba if every day starts at sunrise after a night of dancing.

In the afternoon choose one light activity:

  • Visit Lukshmi Vilas Palace
  • Walk through Sayaji Garden
  • Shop for traditional Navratri attire
  • Rest at hotel
  • Attend a beginner Navratri Garba class if available

Attend a different type of Navratri Garba in the evening. If you attended a large professional event the previous night, you may want to experience a smaller community event for contrast.

Day 4: Vadodara to Ahmedabad

Leave early in the morning and drive towards Ahmedabad.

Once in Ahmedabad:

  • Check in to a hotel near your chosen event
  • Eat a light meal
  • Rest for at least two hours
  • Leave early for the Navratri Garba event

Do not assume that a venue ten kilometres away will take only 20 minutes. Traffic around events, road closures and parking queues can add a large amount of time to your travel.

Day 5: Ahmedabad sightseeing and return plan

Spend the morning resting. Depending on your energy and travel time, visit one or two of the following:

  • Sabarmati Ashram
  • Adalaj Stepwell
  • Riverfront
  • A heritage area in the old city
  • A market for handicrafts

If you are returning to Mumbai the same day, leave early enough to avoid a dangerous overnight journey.

A better option is to add one more night in Ahmedabad and return in the morning after a full night’s rest.

Three-day itinerary for a short holiday

If you only have three days, do not plan to include Ahmedabad in your itinerary.

Use this simpler route:

Day 1: Mumbai to Surat

Leave early, rest and attend one Navratri Garba event.

Day 2: Surat to Vadodara

Arrive in Vadodara by afternoon and then attend a large Navratri Garba event.

Day 3: Vadodara to Mumbai

Rest properly before leaving. Leave early in the morning and include time for food and rest.

This itinerary allows for two Navratri Garba events without making the entire trip a road journey.

Should you add Pavagadh or Ambaji?

Pavagadh is the more practical temple addition to a trip to Vadodara.

Champaner-Pavagadh is about an hour to 90 minutes from Vadodara depending on traffic and the point of origin. During Navratri, temple routes can be very crowded.

Ambaji is an important Navratri pilgrimage destination but is much further north. According to Gujarat Tourism, Ambaji, Pavagadh and Bahuchraji are amongst the most important Navratri pilgrimage sites. Gujarat Tourism festival information

Only add Ambaji if:

  • You have at least six or seven days
  • Pilgrimage is a big part of your trip
  • Your group can manage the extra travel time
  • You have researched current temple and traffic conditions

How much will the trip cost?

Prices vary according to trip length, hotel quality, vehicle, event and number of people.

Use the table below as a general guide and not as a final price.

Transport

Shared fuel or basic cab

Sedan, SUV or premium cab

Hotel

Basic double room

Well-rated mid-range hotel

Garba

Simple fuel analysis

Use this formula:

Total kilometres ÷ vehicle mileage × fuel price

For example, if the total distance travelled is 1,200 kilometres, your vehicle gives 14 kilometres per litre and fuel costs ₹105 per litre:

1,200 ÷ 14 × ₹105 = approximately ₹9,000

This is only an example. Use your actual highway mileage and current fuel price.

Also budget for:

  • Tolls
  • Parking
  • Driver allowance
  • Interstate taxes or permits where applicable
  • Extra kilometres for hotel and event travel
  • Garba tickets
  • Meals and accommodation

Do not accept or publish one “all-inclusive” taxi price without checking its exclusions.

Own car or hired outstation taxi?

Both options can work.

Driving your own car

An own-car trip gives you the most freedom and privacy. It can also be cheaper if you are in a group.

However, one person may carry the burden of driving. After a late Navratri Garba event this person may not be alert enough for a long drive.

Hiring a taxi

A taxi can be more comfortable if:

  • Your group wants to attend late-night events
  • Nobody wants to drive for ten hours
  • You are travelling with children or elderly family members
  • You have heavy traditional garments and luggage
  • You want one-way pickup or a multi-city journey

When booking a cab from Mumbai to Gujarat, confirm the following:

  • Vehicle model and seating capacity
  • One-way or round-trip billing
  • Included kilometres
  • Extra-kilometre rate
  • Toll and parking policy
  • Driver allowance
  • Night charges
  • State tax or permit charges
  • Cancellation terms
  • Luggage capacity
  • Driver-rest arrangements

Commercial passenger vehicles require the appropriate permits. According to the government’s Parivahan portal, permits allow the use of a vehicle as a transport vehicle. The All India Tourist Permit system applies to certain tourist operators. Parivahan permit service, All India Tourist Permit portal

Ask the taxi company to confirm that the vehicle is properly authorised for interstate travel.

Garba event entry, dress code and etiquette

Do I need a pass?

For large events with organised participation, passes are usually required. For small community or society Garbas, the rules may differ. These events may only be open to residents or invited guests.

Do not assume that entry will be available at the gate.

Check event entry details

Prior to booking, check for the following:

  • Access for players or spectators
  • Dress code
  • Age restrictions
  • Child entry policy
  • ID requirements
  • Check-in time
  • Re-entry policy
  • Parking availability
  • Bag policy
  • Photography policy
  • Refund and cancellation policy

What should I wear?

Women usually wear a chaniya choli and men a kurta, kurta with comfortable trousers or a kediyu.

Traditional dress is encouraged, however rules may vary per event.

Comfortable footwear is advised. Hard or new shoes may cause blisters after a few hours of dancing. Carry a few safety pins and wear light jewellery that is easy to move around.

Beginner Garba tips

If you’re new to Garba,

  1. Attend one complete round.
  2. Join the outer circle.
  3. Follow the person in front of you.
  4. Maintain sufficient space.
  5. Begin with simple two-step Garba.
  6. If out of sync, move out of the circle.
  7. Do not suddenly stop in a fast circle.

Enjoy the event rather than try to dance perfectly.

Food on the road

Some popular food on the road is:

  • Handvo
  • Dhokla
  • Thepla
  • Fafda and jalebi
  • Sev usal
  • Khaman
  • Undhiyu (if available)
  • Surti locho
  • Gujarati thali

Try to eat light before attending Garba. Eating a heavy fried meal followed by fast dancing can cause discomfort.

If you’re fasting, find out how the food is made. “Fasting food” may still contain ingredients that do not suit your personal or religious beliefs.

Carry water but check if outside bottles are allowed. Drink often and take breaks when you start feeling weak, dizzy or unusually breathless.

Important road and event safety tips

Never drive when sleepy

Driving under the influence of sleep during the night while attending Garba and travelling on the highway is a bad combination. If you are sleepy, get back to the hotel or change drivers.

Opening windows or drinking coffee does not make sleepy driving safe.

Keep it flexible

Road conditions, traffic and queues can influence your trip. Do not book tightly connected experiences with no time in between.

Avoid isolated pick up points

Choose a well lit and clear place to meet. Share the driver and vehicle details with all members of the group.

Plan return before arrival

Mobile reception may slow down at busy events. Plan in advance,

  • Where your vehicle will wait
  • Which gate will be used
  • When the group will meet
  • What to do if someone is separated

Keep valuables safe

Carry a small secure bag. Do not carry large amounts of cash or expensive jewellery. Keep a digital copy of all your ID and booking details.

Follow local customs

Garba has a devotional background. Follow the event rules, dress appropriately and avoid blocking dancers when filming.

Common mistakes to avoid

Covering too many cities

Kutch, Dwarka, Somnath, Gir, Ahmedabad and Vadodara cannot all be fully experienced in a short period of time during one festival.

Focus on Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad over a period of five days.

Booking hotel before picking an event

Ahmedabad and Vadodara are large cities. A cheap hotel far from the Garba venue can add several hours to your travel time.

Assuming that all passes are the same

A spectator pass may prevent dancing. A player pass may require traditional dress. Always check the details.

Ignoring recovery time

Dancing until midnight and leaving at 5:00 in the morning is not a particularly comfortable holiday plan. Allow for rest and sleep.

Depending on estimated driving times

Navigation apps cannot always predict traffic caused by festivals, flooding or temporary diversions. Allow extra time.

Choosing the smallest taxi

Traditional clothing and group luggage takes up space. A small taxi may not be comfortable for four adults on a multi-day trip.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for a Navratri trip from Mumbai?

Three days is enough for Surat and Vadodara. Five days is better for Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad. Add more days if visiting Ambaji, Kutch or Saurashtra.

Which city has the best Garba in Gujarat?

Vadodara is the best choice for a Garba focused trip. Ahmedabad has the most variety of events, food, hotels and sightseeing. The best choice depends on group preferences.

Can beginners attend Garba in Gujarat?

Yes. Beginners can start in the outer or slow circle and follow along with basic steps. Some events also have pre-Navratri workshops.

Can I attend without traditional dress?

It depends on the event. Some events strongly encourage or require traditional dress. Check the written event entry rules.

Is Ahmedabad possible as a weekend road trip from Mumbai?

Yes, but it is tiring. The trip can take anywhere from nine to eleven hours each way before long stops or festival traffic. Surat or Vadodara would be more comfortable for a short weekend.

Are children allowed at Garba events?

Many events welcome children. However age limits and tickets may vary. Check the child entry policy before purchasing adult tickets.

What is the safest return plan after Garba?

Stay near the event and use a pre-arranged driver. Avoid starting a long highway journey late at night.

Should I book a one-way or round-trip taxi?

A round trip is suitable if you have a set itinerary. A one-way taxi may be more suitable if you plan to return by train or flight. Compare the total cost including tolls, permits, driver charges and extra kilometres.

Can the taxi wait outside the Garba ground?

It depends on the event’s parking and traffic plan. Roads near large events may be closed or controlled. Agree on a legal pickup point before entering.

Plan a more comfortable Gujarat Navratri journey

The best festival journey is not the one with the most cities. It is the one that allows for sufficient time to rest, dance, eat well and enjoy each city.

For most travellers, a Surat-Vadodara-Ahmedabad itinerary strikes the right balance. Choose your Garba events first and stay close to the event venues. Allow extra time for traffic and weather.

If you do not want the stress of long distance driving, One Side Taxi can be considered for a one-way or round-trip outstation journey. Confirm vehicle type, permits, kilometres and all chargeable items before booking.

With sensible planning your Navratri road trip from Mumbai to Gujarat can become a safe, colourful and memorable festival experience
